Strengthen Your Meaning and Purpose in Times of Struggle

Our personal and professional lives are constantly changing and evolving. To boot, many women hold multiple jobs. For example, women may hold a formal job or career (that brings home an income) in addition to informal, often unnoticed “behind the scenes” work that is unpaid. Many of us are raising children or caring for aging parents, both of which involve spending earned income! With so much happening in day-to-day life, we are all at risk of having a “knock at the door” (or unexpected intrusion) from various stressors that are hoping to make their way into our homes and wreak havoc. Our “homes” include the work we do, our relationships with self and others, and life in general. So how do we prepare ourselves for…

Kakeibo: The Art of Financial Mindfulness

By Gina Messina, Ph.D. About a year ago, a friend introduced me to Kakeibo, the Japanese art of budgeting and applying mindfulness to our spending, and I’ve been obsessed ever since. You see, I am a major contributor to our consumeristic culture. I see something shiny and I think I have to have it. A friend jokes that she hates going shopping with me because I have to pick up and touch everything on the shelves (although I’ve eliminated that practice due to COVID!).  Like so many of us, I am easily persuaded by marketing tactics. Now that we so rarely spend cash, it feels like I can simply swipe a card, click a button, or use my fingerprint and suddenly I have a new…

The two “Ps” can seem to be at odds with one another and choosing to prioritize your income or your passion is a difficult decision. According to Dr. Andrea Goeglein, CEO of ServingSuccess, “It’s an age-old career dilemma that every generation has had to grapple with.” Sometimes our passion projects come with the paycheck we deserve; however, this decision is especially challenging when our passion and income goals don’t match. So how do you decide? The answer: It depends. Your current job situation, home responsibilities, and career stage all need to be taken into consideration. When…

Put Down the Scrub Brush for a Moment and Clean Your Life Up with Gratitude

I was curious, so I did a quick Internet search to investigate how many hours we spend, on average, cleaning our homes. What I found was many different results ranging from one hour per day for the average person, to seven hours per week for parents, to two hours per day for women, and to about 20 hours per week for full-time working women. Wow. When you really think about it, we spend a lot of time cleaning (perhaps some of us more than others!). The good news is that cleaning has been found to promote mental health (although I’m not so sure I want my partner to know this!). Cleaning helps us gain a sense of mastery and control over our environment, calms the…
